Pastels & pastellists

ESSAYS

The online edition of the Dictionary now includes more than 2000 articles on pastellists with lists as complete as possible of their works. The scope for discussion of specific works is necessarily limited within this format, and a series of in-depth essays on specific works is indexed from this page. These essays range from 500 to 15,000 words, and discuss individual works in museums and private collections in a format appropriate to a scholarly catalogue. Some are based on articles the author has published elsewhere. Other articles discuss different aspects of major pastellists' work (e.g. La Tour, Perronneau or Litoard), often including a level of biographical detail (reproducing original documents etc.) inappropriate in a Dictionary article. A further group of essays discuss broader topics. The essays include a selection of articles that have been posted on my blog where it is appropriate to have a document of record for permanent reference.
