SEARCH FORM

The whole site, including the online edition of the Dictionary, can now be searched using this form. Enter one or more keywords in the box. A simple name search will find an artist, a sitter, a collector or a museum. For exact searches, insert the phrase in " ". A structured text search can be used to find a specific work: for example using the date of a sale and lot number (e.g. "24.I.2002, Lot 54"). To search for a sitter using dates, use the format "1710–1774" with exact spaces and dash (it is simplest to cut and paste this example into the box, changing the dates as required). Standard catalogues raisonnés can be searched in the form Sani 1988, no. n; Sani 2007, no. n; B&W n; L&R n; R&L n etc. Accents and diacritical marks are ignored. The question mark (?) may be used as a wildcard character for any one character, while the asterisk (*) may be used in place of any number of adjacent characters. The search is across columns, so adjacent words in snippets may not be consecutive in the searched article, and searches for long phrases may overlook occurrences where the phrase is broken. By clicking on the results, html files will open at the highlighted searched word (first occurrence). Results occurring in pdf files normally appear in a two-stage process: by opening each file, a list of specific occurrences within that file should appear in a panel, allowing a further selection to lead to the location sought. You can simplify this process using settings on your browser to open the pdf in a new browser tab rather than as a pdf. For example, in Firefox, go to Settings, type "pdf" in the search bar, and select "Open in Firefox" as the associated action (instead of "Use Windows default application" which is likely to have been selected. (You can also adjust the behaviour through the "highlight and locate" selections in your PDF plugin settings.)
